TopcoMaureenKenOpera

It’s a tradition at Topco:  when you retire you get a caricature by that famous artist Whathername.  I love doing these projects. It’s not just getting the likeness, but then drawing in just enough of the hobby or interest to add character without detracting from the person or cluttering up the image.   In this case, I dealt with a music lover.  Needless to say, I’m partial to people with a passion for the arts.  I really enjoyed drawing Ken as an opera lover, a collector of guitars and a world traveler.  Thanks again, Maureen!

13LangCoupleExpecting

If you scroll down in this blog you’ll notice that baby showers are becoming something of a specialty for me.  I welcome this 13LangCplExpectBIGdevelopment in my career.  I love drawing the pregnant couple with the Out! Out! speech bubble  over the tummy and mommy’s dress will be either pink or blue, depending on who’s expected. And, of course, everybody is so UP and excited with expectation.

Here’s what the host and expectant father  wrote about be in his feedback to the party planning agency through which he had found me:  ” Katherine arrived 30 min early just as she said to set-up, she was very warming, and full of excitement while interacting with people she was drawing. Her work is truly special and unique!! She managed to capture the personalities of everybody she worked with in her drawings!! I without a doubt know that she took the party from good to great with her drawings, energy, and most importantly her professionalism. I look forward to having her at all of my events in the future, she’s just that good!! Thank you  [party planning agency] and a very special thank you to Katherine Hilden you are truly a great talent, artist, and person, thank you.”

Thank you, David!  Best to you, Dominique and the baby girl!

13MerrilvilleMethHosp1

It was the third Mardi Gras for the Methodist Hospital of Merrillville. As soon as I walked in I though, “hmmm, this is an extravaganza.”  What else could you call it, when you see jugglers, magicians, acrobats, fortune tellers, caricaturists, a photographer, a photo booth, a fantastic balloon twister and a stilt walker with a stove pipe hat that must have been 16” high.  That’s just the hat.  The whole figure, dressed in formal black, must have been twelve or thirteen feet high.  Large balloons constructions in green, purple and gold were hanging from the ceiling. And then the guests:  long gowns, glitter, tuxes and the occasional fancy historic reference.  Best of all, in the Mardi Gras tradition, a king and queen with glittering gold trains about twenty feet long, made a grand entrance and strode up to the stage where they were honored for the volunteer work they had done in the past year.  They were followed by a retinue of other volunteers two of whom would then be voted for this honorary office for the coming year. The festivities honored people who worked beyond the call of duty.  Very impressive!!  Thank you, Rafael!

At this event, I was set up next to an extraordinary balloon twister and face painter, named Miss Pam.  I recommend her highly.   www.Miss-Pam.com.    MissPam@pamelasdesigns.com.    She works in the Chicago & Northwest Indiana Areas.

13Kowalcyk5BIGThe Wheatstack Restaurant in Lisle has a cozy party room with a fireplace.  The fire place wasn’t actually used at this 13Kowalcyk5January birthday party, but it was there to add to the family feeling of this wonderful party.  Instead the DJ worked his craft to get people dancing and dance they did, including some very acrobatic moves, some involving balancing a beer bottle on your hear.  You can tell from the drawings I did that this was a very comfortable crowd.  And look at their reactions when I turned the drawing around for them so see!!  Love it.  Thank you, Mark.

TopcoMaureenFrank78

I just noticed something about this drawing, which was done a few weeks ago.  The line that indicates the mountains around Las Vegas can be interpreted as a “stress graph.”  You can see it to the right of the retiring executive and above the swimming pool.  It’s a mountain and it’s also a graph line. The line goes up, peaks, and then—with retirement—descends.  That’s it, Frank, no more stress, no more tension, it’s all sixes from now on.  Congratulations!

13StarBowling12

Family and caretakers of a severely disabled boy met for cake and bowling on N. Western Ave at what must be a bowler’s paradise. We were celebrating Aaron’s 22nd birthday.  It was a Saturday afternoon and all lanes were booked for parties.  Was it fifteen lanes or forty five? I lost count.  Anyway, it was cupcakes and crashing pins as far as the eye could see.  Happy Birthday, Aaron.  Thank you, Natalie!

12CassinDustinBIG

A curly-headed guy sat down on the couch in front of me with 12CassinDustinhis newly engaged fiancé.  This is at Samantha’s birth party—see previous post.  I mentioned  that this was a very comfortable party.

As I’m concentrating on drawing his cherubic face, I say absentmindedly, “I think I’ve drawn you before,”  He doesn’t answer.  I continue, “Was it in Bartlett?” He keeps still.  “Bartlett, on the Fourth of July.”  I ask if he’s ever been in Bartlett.  He say, he has friends in Bartlett.  He smiles.  I’m getting warm.  Then a name comes to mind.  “Your name is Justin, is that it, Justin?  I’ve Dustindrawn you before, right?” He laughs and then he says,  “Dustin.”    “Yessss, that’s it, Dustin.”  He laughs.  I promise to email him the caricature I did of him ten years ago on the Fourth of July  at the edge of a white tent in Bartlett.

When I turned the drawing around for the two of them to see, he threw back his head and laughed.

I hope Rae, the hostess, will forward these photos to him because the slip with his email address got left at the party.  Best to you, Dustin!
