13HalfwayA

At the end of August I was at a Health Outreach on Sheridan near Lawrence.  This is an organization that transitions people from being institutionalized under care and supervision into independent living in their own 13Halfway7apartments.  For the sake of discretion I only documented my drawings, not the individuals who posed for them and I put on the name only if specifically requested.  It was a small “graduating class” and I drew as many staff people as graduates.  Can you tell them apart?  No. ( Reminds me of a scene in which  Jack Nicholson takes his buddies sailing.)

Thank you, Cynthia. Going for color was well worth it.  I drew fifteen people in full color in two hours. I’m sure every one of these drawings inspires confidence and optimism in these people’s lives. —————————–

13MeridianBanqu6These were finance people and percentage talk was all around me at this trade meeting at the Meridian Banquet Center in Rolling Meadows.  I drew thirteen people in one hour with great flair, I must say so myself, and managed to document some of the drawings.  It was a good drawing day but my camera work was definitely lacking.  I occasionally have a bad camera day the way some people have bad hair days.

Thank you, Lillian!———————————————-

13BombayWheaton6b

When I hear an unfamiliar name I often ask what it means.  I’m slowly building my vocabulary in Hindi (hah!) and here are some of the words I learned at a 13BombayWheaton6company picnic for a computer company that used to be in Bombay but a few years ago asked all its super smart people to pack up and move to,  where else, Wheaton.  So, I learned that Ankita means “smiling princess; “  Pavithra = pure;  Rohan = progress; Shristi (a girl’s name)= universe, creation;  Palash(a boy’s name)= name of a flower;  Nabeeha = intelligent, Pratham = first.  Btw, Joshua (the only blue-eyed kid I drew) means “Saviour,” but I already knew that.  Gosh, I love words.  Anyway, this was a lovely afternoon in the shade at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Wheaton.

Now my Hindi skill is making rohan, I feel like an ankita and slowly, as I admire the palash growing near me, I’m being transformed into a more nabeeha  particle in the shristi. Wow.  Oh, joshua,  I’m ready for my pratham quiz!

13YMCAberwyn1bThere were other activities and, of course, lots of pasta 13YMCAberwyn1to eat, but someone was always there to be drawn.  I drew twenty-three people in two hours.  Thank you, Stephanie!

The two girls, who look so serious here (below), became my best friends.  They were at my side pretty much the whole evening, enjoying the drawing process and asking questions.  I love that.

13Bikes1b

It was pouring.  I was set up under one of the ten white tents.  Every twenty minutes or so someone came by 13Bikes1with a broom stick to poke the tent roofs so that the accumulated water could release to the ground.  Good grief! Saturday had been a fine sunny mid-September day and Monday was going to be glorious again, but the Sunday in between, yukk, buckets of rain all day.  It was particularly painful, since this was all about biking.  Not only that, it was about raising money for custom built bikes for disabled kids—as gifts to them.  By 10:30 a.m. when I was setting up under the soggy tent, a set of bikers was 13BikesAalready coming back from their benefit ride. I could see umbrellas and hoodies, but some people just walked around soaked.  Predictably, attendance at this event was low, though it was a carefully planned benefit.  I suggested to the organizer, that it would be best if I worked in color.  Color takes a little longer, but there wasn’t going 13BikesBto be a line anyway.  And color would possibly cheer things up a bit.  I ended up drawing only eight people in two hours.  There just weren’t many people around and those who did come seemed more concerned about grabbing something hot to drink.  Good work, Tamara! Try again next year, don’t give up.————————

13FreemanAa

It was a home health care organization and one of the relatives threw a big bash at his house and driveway to 13FreemanAhonor these hard working people.  Big bash in a small, but superbly remodeled home.  We’re in Evergreen Park, across the street from a park where two baseball games were underway on this Saturday afternoon.  I drew 21 people in 2 hours.  The pace was unhurried everyone had a hearty sense of humor and you can tell from the photos that people got tickled by these drawings. Thank you, Dominic!

13FreemanSetUpBtw, my set up is compact, about 4’ square.  Here’s what it looked like in Dominic’s living room.

This was a first birthday party in the Elk Grove Village 13jen2Park District.  You can get an idea of how great the party room was from the background in these photos.  I drew 23 people in two hours.  Thank you, Cindy!
