StCharles1
This was a family gathering to celebrate Porter’s first StCharles2birthday. You can find him in the gallery, below, he’s the spiffy baby in a gray v-neck sweater. One of the guests had been a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. She reminisced about those days and so, naturally, I drew her at her easel.
In all, I drew nine-teen people in full color in two hours. Thank you , Vickie.

The host invited forty friends to celebrate his birthday—probably his 40th ( just my guess)—at the Fulton Market Kitchen on Sangamon and Randolph in IMG_4087Chicago. This is a place to see and be seen. We had a private dining room with a two-story high ceiling and a bar that was constructed out of a collage of chairs. I use the word “we,” in the sense that I blended in, like a fly on the wall. I wore black, of course, and roamed inconspicuously, drawing people as they were standing around talking and then later as they were seated for dinner. It’s a bit tricky to pull this off gracefully and, judging from the host’s gratitude,  it seems I succeeded, while enjoying myself thoroughly. I drew everybody (in three hours), but only took two shots of my drawings. And here they are.

Family and friends came to celebrate Jeremy’s thirteenth birthday in his backyard in Plainfield. It was a plain gorgeous day on the first weekend in September. I drew forty people in three hours.Thank you, Elizabeth and Francisco, for being such thoughtful, kind hosts.

Wilmette2Among the guests was a furniture designer who flew in from Berlin to be with family at this party. Wilmette1Because of his business, he often goes to Finland, where, I was told, men pride themselves in growing idiosyncratic facial hair. He himself settled on the minimal “soul patch.” Back at my desk, I looked up beards at http://www.beards.org/styles.php. There’s a style called the “Balbo.” Who knew.
One of the women described herself as a cougar. Oh, I said, how old is he. Well, she said, I’m ninety-one and he’s eighty-nine.
In the middle of the lawn was a psychoanalyst’s booth with many signs attached to it. One of them said, “Leave your baggage here.”
There was fabulous singing and banter by Megon McDonough and her accompanist. I didn’t catch where she performs now, but she used to sing at the Gate of Horn when she just started out and once got kissed on the cheek by Frank Sinatra who wished her luck. Her response was to wish him luck, too.
My own work seemed to have been a hit. I got asked back for another party in April. I’ll be there, wouldn’t miss it! Thanks, Carol.

That’s what they call themselves, “The Blockheads.” They all live on the same up-scale block, are all successful in business, are all above-average good looking , and own big dogs. They are intensely sociable. When one couple was retiring and planning to move to their country house in (where was that?) Kentucky, something had to be done. A party had to be thrown and a caricaturist had to be called in to draw everybody.
So that’s what I did. I came to the party and sketched everybody very quickly. I took notes on color of eyes, etc, and on their interests. Then, back in my studio, I assembled the heads on a large piece of paper and finished the drawing in color. It’s a well-practiced process, works very well.
When Jeanne, the organizer of The Blockheads, got the finished drawing in the mail, she emailed me: “…we can’t stop laughing.” A pretty nice going-away present, if I say so myself.
So that’s what I do!

This September picnic is an annual event at a nursing home on the north side. It’s for the kids of the staff people and for the grandchildren of the residents. I enjoy it every year. Thank you again, Krystal!

In the middle of September we had the first chilly autumn day. The employees of this insurance IMG_4006services company and their families zipped up their hoodies and  buttoned up against the breeze and I, since I had to sit still for my work, came in multi layers of the polar fleece and ski pants variety. People like to comment on my gloves with the fingertips cut off. To draw, the hands have to be warm. It was a beautiful afternoon in Techny Prairie Park. Thank you, Laura.
