Silverado1
Silverado2For this grandparents day at the Silverado in Lake Zurich we had perfect weather, one of those glorious September days that feel like half summer and half fall. I drew kids and staff. A most enjoyable afternoon! Thank you, Michelle.

The last time I did a party for Tom and Cathy we were in the pool house. This time they were holding a catered luncheon party for friends of the daughter who were getting married next weekend. We were in the main house and I was set up in the library, using a corner of the host’s hundred-and-fifty-year-old desk. The conversation was pretty good, shall we say, involving an upcoming trip to Paris for a couple of friends, a trip around the world for my hosts and reminiscences of baking adventures in France, Switzerland, Germany and England a number of years ago. The woman in the hat, shown above, had just come back the day before from the Toronto Film Festival. Another stylish young woman told me how nice Ralph Lauren is in person. I enjoy everything about Tom and Cathy’s parties, including the three-quarter-of-a-mile drive way through fields and woods from the main road. Really wonderful people! They collect my drawings of them and there they are framed on the library shelf on the other side of the camouflaged Dickens ‘n’ Balzac film noir liquor cabinet. Love ya, let’s do this again soon.

Paulina1I clipped a little auxiliary light to my drawing board because the bulb hanging from the middle of the tent created a lovely atmosphere for the guests but was not bright Paulina2enough for me to draw by. My little Canon PowerShot has a setting for night scenes, but I didn’t bother fiddling with it. That’s why I don’t have shots of the people, only one couple, when I decided to take a chance. The parents of the birthday kids told me everybody really loved the drawings. I could tell by the enthusiasm when they got their turn and by how much concentration everybody, especially the kids, brought to sitting still. Thank you, Paulina!

DOG1
DOG2The people at Tails of Hope in Highland Park rescue dogs from cruel owners and bad situations, rehabilitate them and then try to find good homes for them. Last Saturday, The Grand, a supermarket on Green Bay Road in Winnetka, hosted an Adopt-a-Palooza in their parking lot. I was set up under an umbrella and had the pleasure of drawing dogs with their “persons” in close harmony. The dogs, of course, ran the show. To depict the communication and closeness between person and dog, I drew the person imitating the dog’s posture of obedience. The tongue had to hang out. This is fun to draw! Many people didn’t come with their dog and asked me to work from a photo on their smartphone, which they proudly presented. This I can do and the work was well received and with much laughter. After all, true dog lovers think their dogs are funny.  Thank you, David!

MachesneyPk1
machesneyPk2Ooooh, Machesney Park! You went to a party in Machesney Park?! Has a ring to it, doesn’t it. Is that near Pasadena, CA? No, no, it’s twenty minutes north of beautiful downtown Rockford.
We were celebrating a combined birthday of two girls. I drew everybody at that big and big-hearted party in that little house. Great event. Thank you, Veronica!

OakPark1
These nine-year old girls liked singing and hamming it up with a mike. OakPark2So the parents got a karaoke machine and threw a karaoke party. Of course, what else is there to do! Next year, they may be into something else. Go for it!
And then you do need to have them caricatured by that famous artist, Whatsername. Now, this is Oak Park and we’re a couple of blocks from the Frank Lloyd Wright House and we’re in one of those fabulous, spacious, oak-everywhere old homes that are perpetually in renovation. I loved everything about this gig. The architecture, yes, but also the fact that the kids were so wholesome and genteel and I got to draw them in this glammed up way. What a treat for everyone! Including me. Oh, I also drew the two brothers and the mom ‘n’ dad. Thank you, Chris!
