That’s in Cincinnati, just south of the art museum. It was the closing performance of “Murder for Two,” and the management decided to throw a party for the audience. Nice.  You need a caricaturist for a party like that and, of course, that had to be that famous Whatsername.

My kind of crowd: theater lovers, people who know how to make an entrance, people who do a dance step or a dancey wiggle at the drop of an eyelid, people who worry about LIGHTING. Think of the Hogarth crowd in 18th century Bath, if you can.  Well, I do.

Thank you Clare!

Dogs brought their humans to this fundraiser for a canine shelter in Columbus, IN.  There was lots of space for humans to run around and dogs to keep them under control.  Isn’t that how the relationship works? Ha.  We were in one of the hangars in the County Fairgrounds. Very interesting and lots of fun. I hope to do this event again, annually perhaps.

You can see my little work stand in the foreground.

Thank you, Jeanne.

There’s no need for anyone to be this beautiful!  And smart and charming…

Face painters and caricaturists were set up on the balcony.  Great view! This was in the Indiana Roof Ballroom at 140 W.Washington. The place to see and be seen.

I worked in full color, which was a treat for both me and the guests.  Everybody was beautiful and felt beautiful. A glittering event. I asked one of the  women what her favorite color was.  She said, glitter.

It was a privilege to be invited to participate.  People stood in line to be drawn and often got drawn by more than one caricaturist.  I, as happens so often, stayed overtime, by—how shall I put it—popular demand.  My pleasure!  Thank you, all.

And thank you, Drew.————————————————-

I love this place–the up-beat cause; the smart energetic people, the lovely setting on Mass Av!  I’ve donated books before and now I had the opportunity to donate my time.  I was set up near the window (notice the exposure in late afternoon) and drew the visitors for one hour, eleven in all.  Great fun. Thank you, Olivia and Ryan.

The caption for this drawing could be, “We made up at the Beet Street Fair.”  When they first sat down in front of me they were nasty, nasty-funny.  About nothing in particular, it was a general stand off, as in “are we breaking up or are we getting together again.”  They told me that this on-and-off is how it goes with them, they love each other but always fight.  You can see, I got some of the growl and the I’m-not-talkin’-to-you in the drawing.  By the time the drawing was done, in about eight or ten minutes, their mood had warmed up to something close to happy.   What is it about caricatures?  Or was it the October sweetness in the air?  Or just plain Milwaukee?

streetfair7

In mid-October Goodkind and two other bar/eateries put together this big street fair in the Bayview neighborhood of Milwaukee.  It was a delight!  What is it about Milwaukee?  Every time I drive up there for a gig I come back wondering why I like those people so much.  They’re at ease, funny, self-confident and good-looking.  They can be stylish-edgy; when they show up in un-repentant hippie overalls, they come across as ironic, still stylish-edgy.  Mind you, I’m not fishing for more gigs up in Milwaukee…it’s a long drive.  But still, what is it about Milwaukee?

I enjoyed everyone who sat for me that glowing October afternoon.  I have the pictures to prove that the pleasure was mutual. Here’s documentation of a few of the more riotous moments. More in the next post.

KohlMuseumB The Kohl Children’s Museum in Northbrook was hosting a benefit. I found an adult size bench for the visitors to sit on—not so easy in a place where everything is Lilliputian—and started to draw. I drew not only the visitors, but also staff, many of whom were college students majoring in early childhood education. One of these was this young woman from Kenya, who now studies at Oakton. I’m featuring her here because of how she reacted to the drawing. She clasped her hands together in an expression of absolute delight. I love this shot! She is clearly happy and will treasure this picture. I get paid well for my work, but there’s more to it. Seeing a reaction like this, makes my day!

14AkibaSchechterAAs is customary at benefit parties, there were long tables with fabulous things to bid on. But you also 14AkibaSchechterBhave to have a caricaturist. Moi! I was pleased to be part of the entertainment along with magician Randy Bernstein and stilt-walker, juggler Ken Schultz. This was a posh but very relaxed fundraising bash for an orthodox Jewish school in Hyde Park. Members of the community also performed: violin, piano and a polyphonic vocal group. Great fun! Thank you, Debbi.———————-
