Here’s what you need for a successful party: balloons, food and that famous caricaturist Whatsername.  We were partying in the Hillview Government Center in Louisville to celebrate Jim’s 75th birthday.  One of his daughters flew in from Colorado to organize this generous bash.  And generous it was! Sumptuous! Though I don’t eat when I work, I could tell that everybody loved the food.  You can eat while I draw.  It only takes about a minute of your attention for me to get the gist of your face and then I go to work for a few more minutes. Doesn’t take long. Not even color takes long, about 5 minutes per person, and color is so much fun.  This was a great party.  Everybody got into it, everybody loved the drawings.  So rewarding for everybody –and for me!  Thank you, Michelle!

All that was all fun, but what happened on the paper when I had these two brothers across the table from me was, well, beyond my control:

So simple. Allisonville Meadows, where Jane lives, has a party room on the first floor with light pouring through the large windows and a good view of the well-groomed landscaping.  The only other ingredient you need is family. They all came, some from Grayslake way north of Chicago.  But, hey, we don’t turn EIGHTY every day?

Oh, what else do you need? That famous caricaturist Whatsername.

Thank  you for finding me, Larry!

I was delighted to be invited back to draw in this lively space.  This time we were celebrating the Fifth Birthday of Indy Reads Books.

Not only the space, I also find the people who come here very interesting.  This woman with the high hat, for example.  I took a little break in my four-hour engagement, had a little nibble and looked around at people I had not drawn yet.  Here was this hat. After my compliment I leaned that it was self- made and that led to more conversation.  Linné and I talked about education and family all the while I was drawing her. How wonderful!

Thank  you, MaryAnna!

Glencoe is a pretty posh suburb of Chicago.  This was a thirteen-year-old’s birthday party with only 5 friends invited.  The girls were so into the drawings, they laughed uproariously as they watched the drawing come to life on my paper and then when they saw the finished product they just lost it.  I was so swept up in the hilarity that I didn’t even get a picture of the funniest stuff.  Oh, well.  This reaction is what I work for and it was fabulous, as you can see. The younger brother was hovering and did finally get his drawing, but he was not on the girls’ wavelength to get the depth of the in-jokes operating here.

…beautiful and smart. The guys were –surprise!—engineers. They had dramatic eyebrows, just for me, obviously.  The women were—surprise!—more beautiful than anybody needs to be.  And they were into color. One sari was hand painted by the wearer. She and I talked shop. The kids were, yes, you know, just beautiful.  A great way to spend an afternoon. That’s my job!

Thank you, Neelam.————————————————-

My painting students know that I draw caricatures at parties. Every now and then one of them hires me to do a family event.  This was Veronica’s daughter’s 17th birthday.  Her passion is theater and her friends are all thespians.  Can you tell?!!

Veronica, you chose the Hawaiian theme…in an attempt to calm them down? Haha.

Thank  you, Veronica.——————————————-

This was a beautifully organized party for Alexis’s seventh birthday.  The theme was art, Alexis’s favorite thing. Mom had set up art projects to engage in.  The cake plates were palettes. The goody bag was all about being inspired and inventive. How lovely!

Thank you, Christie!
