The Admiral is a posh retirement home on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. I was invited back to liven things up at their September luncheon.  People were tentative at first—this happens sometimes—but after a while there was a line and the conversation over the drawings got pretty lively.  A big factor at parties is food, which has to be enjoyed first before you join the crowd around the caricaturist for extra pleasures like laughing over your caricature and commenting on your friends’. When you’re planning an event, remember: laughter is therapy.

Thank you, Jennifer!

SororityB
A University of Chicago sorority hosted a Reading Awareness party, to encourage students to tutor the illiterate. I think. I didn’t actually see that part of the event. I was there to draw whoever sat in front of me in at the Reynolds Club. The were mostly majors in econ, math and physics. Quite thrilling, loved every minute. Thank you, Noreen.

GolfClubA
‘Twas the third week of December and everything GolfClubBglittered festive in this north suburban country club. Nothing but the best. Everything was taken care of. Everybody was relaxed and looking good. Everybody enjoyed my work, which was, I must admit, pretty good. How could it not be, in such a congenial atmosphere! I drew twenty-seven people in full color in three hours. You can see the hilarity in the reactions when they first see the drawing.  Thank you, Dale.

14KentuckyDerbyA
On May 3rd, I was invited to draw the guests for the three hours before the race started in Churchill Downs, Kentucky. We were in Palatine, Illinois, and 14KentuckyDerbyBthis Kentucky Derby Party was in its tenth year. One of the guests told me that folks drove and even flew in from all over to have a mint julep here on this festive occasion.
The hostess, a very casual, jovial woman, had made it obligatory for everyone to wear a hat and ladies had to come in dresses. Whale, ah dee-clair!
There’s something about dressing up that brings out the best in people. I had wonderful chats with these mint julep drinking hat wearers while I was drawing them and I drew twenty four of them in full color in three hours.
Btw, California Chrome won, if you haven’t gotten the news yet. Thank you, Sherri!

13Lithuanian6bThe Grand Dukes is a night spot in Summit, at 63rd and S. Harlem.  (We’re not in Wilmette any more, Toto.)  The 13Lithuanian6owner was throwing himself a birthday party.  But I suspect every Friday night is party night at the Grand Dukes, every night for that matter, where the women are gorgeously tall and  leggy  and all the men are very relaxed.  The band was singing Lithuanian Rock and I think I heard Dylan in there somewhere, also in Lithuanian.  I drew twenty-two people in one-and-a-half hours, with great abandon, to reflect the ambiance.  Love this scene!  The pen just flows!  I hope the next time—and you did say there would be more parties like this, Andrew!—I’ll be allowed to work in color. The colors in this place are hard to resist.  Thank you, Andrew, and happy birthday!

13YouthHostel2b

It’s nice to be asked back.  I was there for the first annual party last June and now I got to draw some of 13YouthHostel2the staff again, always interesting.  The guests, of course, were new, this being a hostel for international travelers.  What a great gift from Chicago!  Notice the tattoos saying “Chicago” in a heart with an arrow through it. I’ll keep that in my bag of tricks. They loved it. I’ll show a few of the drawing here.  The reactions were priceless.  Thank you,  Sharday, and watch out for the corner of Addison and Broadway!

Their husbands are executives in an international company and so they move around a bit. They talk about London, Rome or Rio as if these were neighboring suburbs.  Everybody speaks a handful of languages—fluently.  I drew thirteen of these cosmopolitan women, who came from India, Australia, Denmark, Germany, France, Argentina, Belgium, Britain and the Faroe Islands.  I practiced a little French and German on them and asked to hear some Faroese, which sounds a lot like Swedish.    Art, culture, food…pretty good company, I must say.  They were celebrating the birthday of a member, the founder of this ex-pat club.  I drew them all in an hour-and-a-half and then was invited to enjoy some of their fabulous pot-luck.  Thank you, Jackie.  Happy Birthday, Eva!
