He hunts and she shops. Both with style and vengeance. This drawing was a 50th anniversary gift from an admiring family friend. Good ideas make good drawings. I loved working on this project. Thank you, Karey.

The man who commissioned the drawing of Béla Fleck’s family (previous post) liked that drawing so much that he decided this was a great gift idea. His son had gotten married that year and he thought, a caricature of the bride and groom would make an excellent Christmas present. And so it does! I got an email saying the newly weds loved it.Yeah!

Since they’re famous musicians with numerous performances on YouTube, this project was easy. Seeing people in motion, from different angles, makes my work easier and most enjoyable. An uncle of Ms Washburn’s commissioned this drawing as a Christmas present.

The director of a private prep school in Chicago commissioned this drawing. He was planning on giving each student a tin of his own home baked cookies accompanied by a copy of this caricature of himself. Can anyone doubt that the world is getting to be a better place? Thank you, Tim!

The family has always been Democrat. The kids were raised as Democrats. One brother called me and said, “we don’t what happened to him, he watches FOX news now and he hates Obama.” A caricature was called for. How else can you tease your brother for turning into a rabid Republican?! Picturing him as a close buddy of Obama’s would be more than a tease. It would inflict some visceral pain, I would think. Looking at this present from his Democrat brother, the Republican brother would have to feel nauseated, wouldn’t he?
A brilliant idea. And it was phoned in fully hatched by the Democrat brother. Thank you, Terry. Sorry, Brian, but, look, I put you in authentic, conservative golfer’s nickers and Argyle socks and you gotta love those flaps on the shoes.

The president of a consulting firm commissioned these drawings of his team leaders. They had been working on a project that involved super-this and super-that. It followed naturally that the team leaders would be depicted as superheroes. I don’t have to understand the intricacies of their work, but I understand the importance of motivating and rewarding people very well. A gift like this is a major pat on the back and will mean a boost of energy and imagination for these people. What a fun project! Thank you, Greg.

It’s as much a mystery to me as to you. A friend of this Ms. Monica commissioned the drawing, requesting the princess motif, the chalice, the libations and the caption. All the rest is my own invention and apparently I read Ms. Monica right. I must say, I like the way this turned out. I particularly like the Gaudiesque throne and the purple platforms, one kicked off. A kicked off purple platform pump speaks volumes, doesn’t it. Thank you, Al.  Happy Whatever, Monica!

Al sent me this email a few days later: “Monica loved her gift!  I got lots of great compliments on the gift.  Thanks again for doing such an awesome job capturing her.”

That’s what they call themselves, “The Blockheads.” They all live on the same up-scale block, are all successful in business, are all above-average good looking , and own big dogs. They are intensely sociable. When one couple was retiring and planning to move to their country house in (where was that?) Kentucky, something had to be done. A party had to be thrown and a caricaturist had to be called in to draw everybody.
So that’s what I did. I came to the party and sketched everybody very quickly. I took notes on color of eyes, etc, and on their interests. Then, back in my studio, I assembled the heads on a large piece of paper and finished the drawing in color. It’s a well-practiced process, works very well.
When Jeanne, the organizer of The Blockheads, got the finished drawing in the mail, she emailed me: “…we can’t stop laughing.” A pretty nice going-away present, if I say so myself.
So that’s what I do!

KitchenAid
This drawing was commissioned by a KitchenAid office in Wisconsin as a gift to a colleague whose specialty was demonstrating the use of these machines in television programs. She was retiring after many years and hundreds of television programs. The juggling motif comes in handy in a case like this. It allows me to show that this person is energetic and enthusiastic even though in her tv demos she was standing behind a counter and the KitchenAid machines were also just standing there. Bo-o-o-ring, not allowed.

SleeveRip
Chicago Police Officer retires. He loves his job, loves Chicago, loves his Harley. He is shown ripping off the sleeve with the CPD star to reveal a tattoo on his bicep: #1 Tact Guy. Now, I don’t know what that refers to. Is “tact” short for “tactical,” or was he the most tactful guy on the force? Or is tact a tactile part of the Harley engine? No matter, this was fun to draw. Anytime you come up with an activity to put into the drawing, the work will be stronger than, say, having someone sit at a desk with a lot of awards around him/her. Oh, please, give me a ripping idea and I’ll tactically ride with it.
