Imagine a front yard as big as a city park for neighborhood joggers: twelve times around and you’ve done your 3 miles.  To find such a yard in Indianapolis is thrilling enough, now add the post quarantine exhilaration of sharing this open greenery with a hundred and fifty ball tossing, laughing, chatting, singing, eating, and dancing newly liberated folk of all ages.  It’s an annual End-of-June bash for members and friends of a near-by Catholic church.  End-of-June?  Yes, indeed, some people will find any time of year, any month on the calendar as an excuse to have a wonderful get-together.

I shared a tent with a face painter and a balloon twister.  Smaller kids stood in line with a parent to have their wishes realized: lots of balloon dogs and star wars headgear and then vivid colors of a kitty face or a unicorn forehead.

School age kids were curious to see how I would portray them.  I never draw children ha-ha-funny.  I want to please them and, knowing that they themselves draw, I hope that my drawing will spark curiosity about how this expressiveness is achieved.

I only got to draw four adults.  You can see that here we get some ha-ha-funny.  Drawing adults is very different from drawing children. I love the psychological nuances of this business. When they see their drawing, adults will laugh out loud. A child will say, “Thank you, I like it.”

It was a wonderful afternoon.  Thank you, Chad!

Now we’re in Edinburgh. Indiana, that is.

Edinburgh, Indiana has been going all out lately to crank up its cultural rating in the area.  So naturally, there will be festivals of all sorts, including a September Fall Festival in the center of town, right next to the library.

Since moving to the Indianapolis area a year ago, I’ve enjoyed many surprises in Indiana. Edinburgh’s Fall Festival has to rank way at the top.  I have done many carnivals in my caricaturing career and seen many rides and carousels, but I have never seen rides like these.  Next time I’ll come early, just to get a turn sitting in TEACUPS  that go round and round.

Never a dull anything here. Mind you, I don’t have a flashy display to draw in customers. No display at all, in fact.  I just count on my drawings being spotted and that’s enough to pull in the crown.  As you can see, the ten-to-twelve year olds spontaneously took over as my agent, bringing me more and more friends to draw.

I was set up under a red tent, which my fans adjusted regularly to provide shade as the sun was setting.

Ah, Edinburgh, Indiana!

Thank you, SaraBeth!

Posting is time-consuming, but I love reviewing my drawings.  These wholesome, fresh faces, for example, and their grateful reactions.  Thank you, Marta!

Glencoe is a pretty posh suburb of Chicago.  This was a thirteen-year-old’s birthday party with only 5 friends invited.  The girls were so into the drawings, they laughed uproariously as they watched the drawing come to life on my paper and then when they saw the finished product they just lost it.  I was so swept up in the hilarity that I didn’t even get a picture of the funniest stuff.  Oh, well.  This reaction is what I work for and it was fabulous, as you can see. The younger brother was hovering and did finally get his drawing, but he was not on the girls’ wavelength to get the depth of the in-jokes operating here.

Well, not too wild, just a lot of running around in this kids’ gym on the north side of Chicago, near Lane H.S.  There was a great puppet show just next to my table, though getting a funny drawing of yourself kept them standing in line.

The photo, above, is priceless. There’s nothing like the giggling of eleven-year-old girls.

I drew thirty-two people in an hour-and-a-half. Thank you, Gary!

…beautiful and smart. The guys were –surprise!—engineers. They had dramatic eyebrows, just for me, obviously.  The women were—surprise!—more beautiful than anybody needs to be.  And they were into color. One sari was hand painted by the wearer. She and I talked shop. The kids were, yes, you know, just beautiful.  A great way to spend an afternoon. That’s my job!

Thank you, Neelam.————————————————-

This was a beautifully organized party for Alexis’s seventh birthday.  The theme was art, Alexis’s favorite thing. Mom had set up art projects to engage in.  The cake plates were palettes. The goody bag was all about being inspired and inventive. How lovely!

Thank you, Christie!

aurora2Onya wore a stylish dress, full of fall colors and October themes.  Her birthday had been at the beginning of the month but this was the best time to get friends and family together.  Everyone was thrilled with the drawings.  Thank you Cheryl.

abigail2Grandma Abigail threw a fabulous back yard party for Neil, who flew in from Texas with his parents.  I have to word it that way because Neil, having just turned one, was clearly in charge.  He wasn’t particularly interested in a family drawing, so I drew him separately and then later his parents also sat down to be drawn.  All in good fun.

It was a wonderful, relaxed afternoon in Homewood.  I drew twenty-four people in two hours.

abigail3Thank you, Abigail!
