milwaukee2 milwaukee1

I had a tent to myself, with extra chairs so that people waiting in line didn’t have to stand, and I drew steadily for six hours with only one short break.  Wentworth Street was jammed with people. http://milwaukeerecord.com/city-life/relive-beet-street-harvest-festival-with-these-photos/

One of the pictures on this site shows a red tractor and you can see it in the background of my photos of the people I drew.  This was my first year participating in this event. The Goodkind organizers said I’d be invited back. So next year you may see pictures of me in The Milwaukee Record.  Yeah!  I’ll be famous in Milwaukee.

The sponsor of my tent, btw, was Jim Beam Apple.  Not being much of a bar hopper, I thought Jim Beam had progressed to making  wholesome apple juice.  Had to look it up: it’s whiskey made from apples. http://www.jimbeam.com/en-us/bourbons/apple.  Next year at this event,  I hope to get a sip. Just a sip; takes concentration to draw caricatures.

What’s particularly interesting to me is that the donations made in my tent all went to a charitable organization that teaches city people how to grow their own food in the city. That’s wonderful.  We need more Growing Power. http://www.growingpower.org

Thanks Lindsey and Katie!

Too many drawings to post from that afternoon.  Here’s a sampling.

Just labels, you say?  Oh, no. Labels are a huge industry.  Who knew.

I worked for an international Swedish company at the Rosemont convention center last week. The whole place was swarming with experts on printing machines, color nuances, adhesives and whatnot related to big and small labels.  I drew dozens of people from dozens of countries, but only took a few pictures of my work.  Because it was a business atmosphere, you understand.

Notice that the lower left corner holds a sticker—a label, ta-tah–identifying my client, because that’s the real message we’re trying to get across here.  Notice, also, that I drew right over the label, not much but just enough to make sure it stays on there when people frame the drawing for their office. BTW, labels are much more economical  than pre-printing the paper and they can hold a lot of information–and in color.

People liked the drawings so much that they occasionally showed me photos of kids or girlfriends on their phones.  Sure, I can do that, too.  In that case, I drew on paper that I hadn’t stuck the sticker on.  Everybody went home happy.

Thank you, Cornelia!

ElmhurstLibr1

I did this event at the Elmhurst Library last year and I was honored to be called back.

https://katherinehilden.wordpress.com/2015/08/29/pop-culture-at-the-elmwood-public-library/

ElmhurstLibr2Comic Con is a big event.  Various artists who work in cartooning, comic strips, manga, and caricature are set up at tables where they demonstrate and explain their art. It’s an exciting day for kids. Many come in the costume of their favorite character from movies such as Star Wars.  Capes galore!

Last year I worked in black/white, which the kids and parents enjoyed.  But this year I worked in full color, which was fabulous! Color takes just a bit longer, but for kids this is the way to go.  B/w is elegant, but let’s face it, color pops off the page!

Thank you, Kim!

Wildfire
Specifically The Wildfire Restaurant at Oakbrook Center. This was a corporate dinner for fourteen people. They were big time financial advisers with offices in the Loop. The boss apparently throws a dinner like this a couple of times a year.  Sounds like a good idea.
IMG_8854We had a private dining room. I had everybody take turns sitting for me for only about two or three minutes. That’s enough time to get the line drawing down. Then, when I had everybody, I went over each drawing and added the bodies and color. This way, dinner and conversation was barely interrupted for anybody. Worked really well, took only two hours. Thank you, Tom.

DOG1
DOG2The people at Tails of Hope in Highland Park rescue dogs from cruel owners and bad situations, rehabilitate them and then try to find good homes for them. Last Saturday, The Grand, a supermarket on Green Bay Road in Winnetka, hosted an Adopt-a-Palooza in their parking lot. I was set up under an umbrella and had the pleasure of drawing dogs with their “persons” in close harmony. The dogs, of course, ran the show. To depict the communication and closeness between person and dog, I drew the person imitating the dog’s posture of obedience. The tongue had to hang out. This is fun to draw! Many people didn’t come with their dog and asked me to work from a photo on their smartphone, which they proudly presented. This I can do and the work was well received and with much laughter. After all, true dog lovers think their dogs are funny.  Thank you, David!

Duncan2

Duncan Kids Academy opened another center, the one on West Madison, and celebrated the occasion with a block party and open house. I had done two of their events before and was delighted to be asked back for this major expansion. The very little kids get fidgety as they sit on mom’s lap while I draw them, but it only takes about a minute for me to get the features down on paper. So, the child doesn’t appreciate what I do, but the parents absolutely love having these drawings for the child’s room. I drew forty-four children in three-and-a-half hours. Here are some of them. Thank you, Rich and Christine.

Ypool1
The opening of this YMCA facility was back in the middle of June. It had been Ypool2a rainy week, but by Friday it was dry and merely cold. Notice the sweatshirts and quilted jackets. It was festive, nevertheless. The kids enjoyed my drawings. If you scroll down, you’ll find the swimming instructor, whom I drew on the diving board, as if she were about to dive. I drew twenty-two people in two hours. Thank you, Sarah.
