Union5
The Union Railroad Museum in (guess where) Union, Illinois, held a huge family day early in June. I was there for six hours, Union6drawing dozens of visitors, both local folk and those who drove in from the south suburbs and from Wisconsin. The railroad has a romantic, nostalgic aura. The day was an opportunity for kids with iphones to learn a bit of American history as their parents took them to sit in an old train station and in hundred year old cars. Here are a few of the drawings from that wonderful day. Thank you, Jeanne.

Niagara
I’ve worked with Niagara Falls Tourism before. Last time was at the Hyatt in December 2012, when I NiagaraFallsColorSetting500drew visitors on paper. Paper, you say, that’s normal. But this time, at Fred’s, I drew on canvas bags. There’s no reason why canvas bags can’t be considered normal. They looked darn spiffy!
This time I also did some pre-drawing. I took the Niagara scene and drew it—in color, individually, by hand—on every bag.
“Fred’s at Barney’s New York” is the full name. Barney’s New York is at Oak and Rush in Chicago. You take the Barney’s elevator to the top floor and you’re at Fred’s—elegant, spacious, good view. Take your date to Fred’s!

IMG_6367
IMG_6368You might think that your caricature on a bag over your elegant shoulder struttin’ down high priced Oak Street wouldn’t fit. You’d be wrong. The art of caricature is the height of elegance—if practiced with an elegant touch. There are caricaturists who learned the trade from Mad Magazine and those guys, ahem, are not elegant. But, ahem, ahem, I learned the trade from Leonardo, Daumier, Hirschfeld and Carrillo. The art of caricature is as cerebral as whatever sense of irony you can mix into your long-stemmed drink, while reflecting on the superior view.

The bags were purchased on line, excellent quality, good prices, speedy delivery: http://totebagfactory.com/collections/wholesale-cotton-tote-bags/products/q-tees-promo-tote-bag-w-color-q4400

inmotionnow1When I draw colleagues, I love to talk shop. Here’s a graphic designer who asked me about the markers I use. I told him that my favorite marker is by Utrecht. It has the best nib on the market. I let Peter try it out. I love my work and people who love their work are always good company and fun to draw.
I spent three days drawing designers at the Design Now Show at the Hyatt. The show was about graphic design innovations and challenges. The company that had me “drawing in” the attendees was InMotionNow, a firm that designs apps for managing the design process. Their slogan is “Do the work you love. Automate the rest.” I inmotionnow2was set up in their booth and drew the curious stoppers-by. By drawing them, I drew them in. Works every time. People love to sit down—oh, I get to sit down!—and get a caricature of themselves. While this happens, they’re a captive audience and the sales person can pour out his/her charm. Then the drawing (in a clear plastic sleeve) acts as advertisement for, in this case, InMotionNow. How simple, how effective!

InnsbrookAInnsbrookBThis Mardi Gras honors the professionals and volunteers who make the Methodist Hospitals in northern Indiana so renowned. It is a gala event. I love this party and this year was the third time I was invited to participate. Here’s a small sample of my work that fabulous evening.  Thank you Mary and Rafael! I hope there will be many more Mardi Gras.

The entertainment was classy.  Make no mistake, this juggler was a great wit, a true theater person, who brought out the best in people.

A University of Chicago sorority hosted a Reading Awareness party, to encourage students to tutor the illiterate. I think. I didn’t actually see that part of the event. I was there to draw whoever sat in front of me in at the Reynolds Club. The were mostly majors in econ, math and physics. Quite thrilling, loved every minute. Thank you, Noreen.

The president of a consulting firm commissioned these drawings of his team leaders. They had been working on a project that involved super-this and super-that. It followed naturally that the team leaders would be depicted as superheroes. I don’t have to understand the intricacies of their work, but I understand the importance of motivating and rewarding people very well. A gift like this is a major pat on the back and will mean a boost of energy and imagination for these people. What a fun project! Thank you, Greg.

Chiropractic1
It was an open house to attract people and get them Chiropractic2acquainted with this healing center on Main Street. There was food, a face-painter and, ta-tah, moi. Oh, and free massages, of course, and questions answered. A delightful excuse to hang out for a couple of hours on a sunny afternoon in what has become a perfect October. I drew twenty-three people in two-and-a-half hours. Thank you, Anita.
