Here’s what you need for a successful party: balloons, food and that famous caricaturist Whatsername.  We were partying in the Hillview Government Center in Louisville to celebrate Jim’s 75th birthday.  One of his daughters flew in from Colorado to organize this generous bash.  And generous it was! Sumptuous! Though I don’t eat when I work, I could tell that everybody loved the food.  You can eat while I draw.  It only takes about a minute of your attention for me to get the gist of your face and then I go to work for a few more minutes. Doesn’t take long. Not even color takes long, about 5 minutes per person, and color is so much fun.  This was a great party.  Everybody got into it, everybody loved the drawings.  So rewarding for everybody –and for me!  Thank you, Michelle!

All that was all fun, but what happened on the paper when I had these two brothers across the table from me was, well, beyond my control:

This was a beautifully organized party for Alexis’s seventh birthday.  The theme was art, Alexis’s favorite thing. Mom had set up art projects to engage in.  The cake plates were palettes. The goody bag was all about being inspired and inventive. How lovely!

Thank you, Christie!

abigail2Grandma Abigail threw a fabulous back yard party for Neil, who flew in from Texas with his parents.  I have to word it that way because Neil, having just turned one, was clearly in charge.  He wasn’t particularly interested in a family drawing, so I drew him separately and then later his parents also sat down to be drawn.  All in good fun.

It was a wonderful, relaxed afternoon in Homewood.  I drew twenty-four people in two hours.

abigail3Thank you, Abigail!

Darnicka1
I drew twenty-two people at this birthday party: eight in color and fourteen in 2Darnicka2black/white. The host/hostess often makes this choice, to have me draw the guest-of-honor and the closest family in color and then I’m asked to switch to the faster b/w. This works very well. As you can see, the b/w drawings have all the humor and are, actually, more sophisticated. Thank you, Darnicka.

EllieGroupPicture
For Ellie’s eleventh birthday I drew all six girls individually in black & white on 8½ x 11. Her mom had bought frames that the girls decorated right there at the dining room table. Then there was another round of drawings. This time I

EllieGroup

took out a large piece of paper, 11×14, they sat for me again individually and drew them all together in color. They all made pouty faces in the selfie fashion . All this took just a few IMG_5585minutes over one hour. Great fun. Of course, it helps if the mom is super organized. Thank you, Sarah.

NatalyA
Nataly invited family and friends to her ninth birthday NatalyBparty. There were games in the back yard. I was set up inside, in dad’s study, and there was always somebody sitting in that wing chair to be drawn. That’s because mom had the whole thing well organized. As for working in color, you can see that for kids this really is the way to go. I drew at least nine-teen people in two-and-a-half hours in full color. Thank you, Mindy.

14NikhilAThis was a birthday party for a one-year-old boy. Family and friends were all Indian. The women and 14NikhilaBgirls were glittering in saris, ghaghras and lehangas. Silk, velvet, and rich embroidery were stunning but, of course, I could not possibly do justice to all these textures and colors. I simply had to simplify due to time restraints—there’s always someone else waiting in line to be drawn—and also because the art of caricature is by its nature about simplifying.
14NikhilCNow, the guys are another matter altogether. Guys come in jeans. Indian, sure, but speaking flawless American English and wearing baggy jeans with a shirt hanging out. Needless to say, this speeds things up considerably in my corner. Occasionally I glance over the dance floor and, I can tell you, the mixture of costumes makes for an interesting scene.

14NikhilDI never did get to draw the birthday boy. I think somebody said he was napping. He’s one, he can do 14NikhilEthat any time he feels like it.

I drew fifteen people in full color in two hours.  Thank you, Nikhi!
