We’re at the Westin in Itasca.  Dinner was served. These people had worked with one another for so long or had been friends for so long that they hardly stayed seated and kept hopping from table to table to say funny stuff to one another.  This was a fabulous party and caricatures were the perfect addition.

Thank you, Jim!——————————————–

Now we’re at University Commons on 15th and Morgan.  The birthday girl, Silveria, is morgan2turning sixty.  Family and friends eating and catching up at a long table, a couple of frolicking dogs and that caricature artist, Whatsername—what more could you want!  I enjoyed this bunch, felt welcome and at home.  You can tell, can’t you, from the drawings and the reactions.

aurora2Onya wore a stylish dress, full of fall colors and October themes.  Her birthday had been at the beginning of the month but this was the best time to get friends and family together.  Everyone was thrilled with the drawings.  Thank you Cheryl.

SocialTableA
You know how when you throw a party at your house everybody congregates in the kitchen?Exactly. Why not throw a party that’s held IN the kitchen. Take it one step further: rent someone else’s kitchen and engage a cooking teacher. That roughly describes The Social Table at Armitage & Halsted in Chicago.
To celebrate her husband’s 60th birthday, Lilia invited twenty six friends, mostly couples, to The Social Table, where they would participate in the cooking of their dinner under the expert guidance of a chef, this one named Ian. They worked on a stainless steel table (the chopping and slicing had already been done by the staff) and when everything was cooked, they cleared the table and, well, feasted. Feasted. What else could you call such eating! I was set up at another table, where people sat for me very briefly, maybe 3 minutes each, so that I could draw their faces. Later, while the cooking heated up, I added the bodies and finished the drawings. Then I presented them in clear plastic sleeves while the main course was still in progress and the wine glasses were being refilled. All to much applause and laughter. Then, guess what, I was invited to enjoy their perfect halibut-in-roasted-red-pepper-sauce. Thank you, Lilia!

That means “Happy Birthday” in Lithuanian. At this lovely party in Lemont I drew twenty-seven people in full color in three hours. As you can see, the bag idea is catching on. I drew the birthday girl with her husband in the center panel and her two kids on the side panels—a sort of triptych.

ShirtA
This was the “third annual surprise party” for Don in Wilmette. His basketball buddies were there and many of the regulars from last year’s party, whom I got to draw again. This year I drew on t-shirts (what size would you like) and on canvas tote bags (if you prefer). Actually many people opted for the bags, which surprised me, since everybody’s side entrances are overflowing with tote bags. But these looked spiffy!! Since I don’t do offensive caricatures, I’m sure shopping with one of these over your shoulder will get you lots of friendly comments. Either way—the t-shirt or the tote bag—this will be a conversation starter. One woman said she will wear her t-shirt jogging.
I drew an infinite regression—at least a start of one—on one of the shirts. Look, in the drawing on the shirt he’s wearing a shirt with the same drawing on it.

14FuddruckersAAt Fuddruckers in Highland Park you come as you are,  your sweats, your shirt hanging out, your hoodie. Not to worry, the table linen consists of paper towels on dowels. So, this was a very informal celebration of  Ayal’s 13th birthday and simultaneously his bar-mitzvah. I didn’t get a photo of my drawing of him, just got swept up in the excitement. The boys really did get totally involved. But enough, let me quote one of the uncles I drew after I had drawn all 14 boys:
“I was actually in a state of amazement over you sitting in a rolling sea of sweet and boisterous adolescent boys and as you worked, you appeared so very comfortable with them — laughing, taking in all that they were loudly proposing — laughing and responding as if you were truly enjoying them as much as they were enjoying you — because you were!! Honestly, it was so great to see. .. you are wonderful!”  Thank you, Uncle Bill.
Thank you, Rhonda.

14LangBaIt was most gratifying to be called back, this time to draw the guests at Dior’s first birthday party. I had been the caricaturist of choice at the baby shower last February (see https://katherinehilden.wordpress.com/2013/02/20/baby-shower-in-bronzeville/) and here she 14LangBbwas, ta-tah, such a lovely baby.
The birthday party was held in the gym early in March at the Y on Stoney Island at 63rd. Balloons everywhere, including large silver ones to spell out D-I-O-R!
Just a note about face painting. As you can see in these photos, sometimes face-painting can cover so much of the face that it functions like a mask. The child will be recognized by friends and family, but not by a newcomer, like me. I can save the day, however, by drawing the profile, which was what I did for many kids. It works. But party planners may want to set things up in such a way that those who want both a caricature and a face-painting, would have the caricature done first. That way there are more options. Still, the profile strategy works fine.
Thanks again, David!—————————————

13Dina713Dina7bGeorge wanted to be drawn with a mustache.  When I do a mustache, I do a MUSTACHE!

A birthday party doesn’t have to be huge or expensive to be festive and memorable.  George was turning eleven.  He invited just five friends to his house after school on a Wednesday before a no-school day in October.  The mom still went all out with decorations, a festive cake and that famous 13MeDinocaricaturist.  In one hour I drew all six kids in full color and then there was time left to draw the dog, super alert and affectionate creature, who was busy being hugged the whole time.  Thank you, Dina!
