Let’s say you think your dentist is a terrific guy and you happen to know that he loves his dogs, one of whom is deceased. Broke his heart, when that dog died. Broke the family’s heart, too. Never mind, it’s too deep to get into here. Suffice it to say, you thought the dentist and his family would love to see the dogs riding the dentist’s motorcycle, which is also a prized possession. This was fun, as you can see. It was a Christmas card, you know. Thanks again, Carol.

13AvisFinal4Or Cody and Fynn!

This was the cover of an 8”x10” Christmas card.  It’s an adaptation of Bill Watterson’s classic Calvin and PostcardHobbes stamp.  I’ve done many Christmas cards, but this one is truly awesome.

When you open the card, you get five Calvin and Hobbes strips with this Lake Bluff family playing the characters in the comic strip.  I worked from photos of the family and never met them.  I really had only one angle of the dad’s face and the girl’s face to work with.  For mom and the boy I managed to also get profiles.  At first I was worried that the dad always looking directly out at the viewer (instead of at the scene in front of him) would not work.  But to my surprise, it works wonderfully.  It’s

13AvisFinal5uncanny, how  the strip with the car is even funnier because dad is looking straight at us in his utter confusion.

What a clever idea! This was a rewarding project for me.  Thanks Bob and Cindy!

I posted “Christmas Card in August” on 9.19.11.  By the end of that week…a commission from New York for a Holiday Card.  Here it is.  Both parents work in the arts.  Apparently, Justin the eight-month-old has unusually big feet.  Three-year-old Bella loves rag dolls, gofigure.  The golden retriever is a placid push-over, so I had fun with that.  Actually, I had fun with the whole bunch of them.  They gave me ideas and let me work them out, with a confidence based on their familiarity with my work as represented in this blog.  Wonderful!  The drawing took one week, start to finish.   Thank you, Becca!

The family flies in from Upper Michigan to vacation in Chicago.  It’s early August.  The mom, a sophisticated woman with my taste in clothes, realizes that this may be a good time to contact an artist.  With a population of around 800, their town offers great nature outings for the kids, but a selection of caricature artists, not so much.  Hey, we’re going to Chicago!  Let’s get ourselves drawn there!  Easy.

We set up a meeting at the Cultural Center where I sketched them and immediately got the work approved.  At the drawing table in my studio, I worked out the composition.  I received a photo of the two Havanese, who were described as mischievous, for one, and matronly, for the other and I enjoyed getting their personalities.   What a great project!

The original drawing, 11 x 14, will be framed and hung at a spot that mom already had picked out. In addition, it will be printed up as this year’s Christmas Card.  No color, they said. I will be an elegant Christmas Card from an elegant family.  Thank you Merle and Charlotte!
