13ConniesPizza1This was a party for women who participate in a study program at one of the hospitals.  I did their Christmas party last year and was happy to be called back again.  Connie’s is a fantastic place on Archer just south of 22nd, full of atmosphere and historic interest. Thank you again, Kathleen!——————————–

13RobinMahd1bGastroenterologists is what they call themselves, but it’s GI for short and that stands for GastroIntestinal.  See?  I learn things at my parties.

13RobinMahd1It was the Holiday Party for the doctors and their staff.  This was a relaxed party in an opulent home and I thoroughly enjoyed partying with these   people.  I say “partying with” because that’s how they made me feel, especially the hostess who insisted that I enjoy myself.   Here are some pictures that document the high spirits all around me this wonderful evening last Saturday.

Thank you, Robin!———————————————

13VictoryMelrosePk1bAt a retirement home it can take a while for the party to get into full swing.  At the Christmas party last Friday  at the Victory Center in Melrose Park things got lively very quickly, though.  At first the DJ played Christmas carols and folks softly sang along.  But he also came with a Karaoke machine and that got plugged in very soon.  Some staff members obviously had musical and theatrical backgrounds because the singing was 13VictoryMelrosePk1quite good.  So, it was the Karaoke singing and me, the caricaturist, by the Christmas tree—a wonderful  atmosphere.  When I draw at retirement and extended care homes, I feel justified in considering my work therapeutic. Can’t measure it, don’t have any statistics, but I can see the happy effect.

Among the people I drew was  the retired TV clown, called T-Bone, who gave me a five dollar banknote with his picture and name on it: Don Theobald.  I drew kids and grandkids and a couple who met at this retirement home and became lovers there.  All in all, an inspiring evening, I would say.  Thank you,        Jeanette and Barbara!

And then there’s a degree of extroversion that expresses itself in explicit information about underwear and what it’s intended to conceal.  Oh, what a stuffy sentence that turned into.

12CCCTech25Here we have a woman in a glittering red dress:  ebullient and voluptuous.  She volunteered dimensional information about her companion that otherwise would have been considered private.  He accepted this in good humor.  Gosh, another stuffy sentence.  But stuffing was sort of the theme, if you get… it was wild and my marker just went along.

When it gets past ten-thirty or eleven at a party where people know each other, the DJ cranks up the volume and– in my corner—the 12CCCTech16hilarity index rises precipitously.  This incline is reflected in my work. Sometimes a really extroverted couple gets to be drawn as the Flintstones  a little earlier in the evening, but usually this theme slips in later.  I think this couple clocked in at about 10:30, the cusp of the evening’s riot.  I rarely draw more than one Flintstones couple per party, so it’s always a special treat for these people.

I’ll have one more post from this extraordinary party. Next.

This was a five-hour Christmas Party for a large tech company.  I will 12CCCTech9show only a small sample of the many people I drew that night. Thanks to Suzanne, who sent me this email after the party: “I just wanted to send you a quick note and tell you thanks for everything.  Your services were fantastic and everyone had such a great time with your caricature drawings!”

12HospitalStudyGroup1

This was a treat for the women who participate in a women’s health study at one of the Chicago hospitals.  A family style all-you-can-eat lunch, raffle gifts and—ta-tah—caricatures by that famous whatshername.    I drew thirty-two people in two-and-a-half hours.  This pace is possible when I stick to  lines to capture the expression (without adding color) and draw a few profiles, which also speeds things up.  (See the post on “profiles.”) You’ll also notice that I did not add bodies in an activity and instead aimed for attitude and presence with the old over-the-shoulder look.

12HospitalStudyGroupConniesConnie’s Restaurant, on Archer near Canal, just South of the Loop, is housed in an old factory with picturesque architectural and structural details and textures, such as handcrafted wooden floors and intricate brick work, and an abundance of historical artifacts to wonder at.  Thank you, Kathleen!

Da Thong

Men usually do show up fully dressed, but sometimes they’re so confident and so sexy that the only way to draw them is stripped down to the essential item.   At fraternity parties—and I’ve done fraternity parties—this all-important item is called “the package.”   It’s great to draw a Speedo, a thong or a caveman’s scrap of leopard skin.   Quick, too, just a flick of the drawing tool.  A generous flick, since the artist gets paid for this perfect stroke.  Ok, enough of this.

Here’s a guy who just collapsed when he saw his drawing.  Not to worry, he then curled himself back up, threw his head back and roared with laughter.  This is good for you, did you know that!  He was obviously a punctual, conscientious, hard-working member of this company, so much so, that he quite obviously didn’t have time to go to the gym.  And he wouldn’t have a tattoo, that much I could also guess.  So, to be portrayed as a muscle man with a tattoo (R is for his wife, Rochelle,  who couldn’t attend this event) was beyond his daily image of himself.  In reality, that is.  In his phantasy life, he probably appears quite a bit like the way I drew him.  Who’s hung up on mere visible reality? Not me– when I’m drawing!

I do hope these drawings are worth a thousand words.  When people double over– head on the table– after seeing the drawing, I can be sure that I’m close to scoring a thousand.————————————————————————-
