Ingle2I drew all the girls at this lively party where I was set up in the midst of pin-ball games. As happens often, I drew the birthday girl and her sister in color and then switched to black/white for the guests to ensure that everybody could be drawn in the two hours.
Thank you, Tara.

I drew twenty-two people at this birthday party: eight in color and fourteen in 2Darnicka2black/white. The host/hostess often makes this choice, to have me draw the guest-of-honor and the closest family in color and then I’m asked to switch to the faster b/w. This works very well. As you can see, the b/w drawings have all the humor and are, actually, more sophisticated. Thank you, Darnicka.

EllieGroupPicture
For Ellie’s eleventh birthday I drew all six girls individually in black & white on 8½ x 11. Her mom had bought frames that the girls decorated right there at the dining room table. Then there was another round of drawings. This time I

EllieGroup

took out a large piece of paper, 11×14, they sat for me again individually and drew them all together in color. They all made pouty faces in the selfie fashion . All this took just a few IMG_5585minutes over one hour. Great fun. Of course, it helps if the mom is super organized. Thank you, Sarah.

BuffaloGrA
When the birthday boy arrived, this artist person in a black suit was sitting in his living room drawing a BuffalpGrBcouple of his friends. He must have known right away that something was up, if his suspicion hadn’t already aroused by all the cars parked around his house. No matter, it was fun. I had already drawn four people in color and then I drew him and his wife in color. If there’s not enough time to draw everybody in color, I quickly put the colors away once the agree-upon special guests have been done in color and then I switch to black/white, which is just fine, in fact it’s more elegant. Thank you, Jill!

NatalyA
Nataly invited family and friends to her ninth birthday NatalyBparty. There were games in the back yard. I was set up inside, in dad’s study, and there was always somebody sitting in that wing chair to be drawn. That’s because mom had the whole thing well organized. As for working in color, you can see that for kids this really is the way to go. I drew at least nine-teen people in two-and-a-half hours in full color. Thank you, Mindy.

13SmithVill10It’s great to be invited back to this elegant retirement home at 113th and Western.  The kids and grandkids spend the afternoon and enjoy food and gifts and, of course, caricatures by that famous artist Whatsername.

13SmithVill10bIt was great to work in color on 11 x14 paper, which has the advantage of fitting four people on the same page while allowing for some expressive details.  I enjoyed this crowd. The conversations got pretty interesting—history, geography and the invention of the microscope.  I drew twenty-three people in three hours– in full color.

Thank you, Jayne and Emily!———————————-

13Pesche14b

Because it was Marc Anthony’s thirteenth birthday, he got his caricature in color.  I drew everybody else—and 13Pesche14that would be nineteen others ( in an-hour-and-a-half)—in black/white.  Let me take this opportunity to contrast and compare.  A line drawing (black/white) has all the humor, expression and likeness that a color drawing has.  It is not inferior to a color drawing.  In fact, I would say, a line drawing is more elegant than a color drawing.  But then, elegance-shmelegance.  It’s a caricature!  So, now I’m going to contradict everything I said before.  A caricature in color 13Pesche13has that extra kick.  The humor and expression really are heightened by color:  blue eyes become BLUE, blond hair becomes BLOND, lips will be PINK or RED!  Etc.  The grass is always greener…in a color.   I like working equally well in black/white and color.  At a party, when the guest of honor gets the color drawing and everybody else gets the line drawing, the guests are gracious about this decision on the part of the parent/host.  Nobody has ever complained about getting 13Pesche13b

“only” black/white.  Because– now we’re back to the beginning–black/white is just as good as color. The choice is always yours.

Thank you , Thera!———————————————
