The family has always been Democrat. The kids were raised as Democrats. One brother called me and said, “we don’t what happened to him, he watches FOX news now and he hates Obama.” A caricature was called for. How else can you tease your brother for turning into a rabid Republican?! Picturing him as a close buddy of Obama’s would be more than a tease. It would inflict some visceral pain, I would think. Looking at this present from his Democrat brother, the Republican brother would have to feel nauseated, wouldn’t he?
A brilliant idea. And it was phoned in fully hatched by the Democrat brother. Thank you, Terry. Sorry, Brian, but, look, I put you in authentic, conservative golfer’s nickers and Argyle socks and you gotta love those flaps on the shoes.

13CookCountySheriffNot Wyatt Earp and not Dodge City.  Not from NYPD, not from LAPD, not from The Wire, not from Men in Black.  But he was a sheriff, he was retiring and he loved golf.  That’s all I was told.  Oh, and his territory was somewhere around Skokie.  Well, that’s enough to work with.  So here he is, in command of the situation…all except the golf ball, which is getting outahere The shirt is the official one from the job, the knee-pants (knickers?) are purple and green.  The belt, instead of bullets, has golf tees.   Don’t know his name, he was Da Sheriff.  Best to you, Sheriff.  Thank you, Mark.

I had a tai-chi teacher once who played golf.  Until very recently, that was my only connection (if that) to this mystery with the little white ball.

What’s been happening recently is that golf players with a sense of humor (!!)  have found me and my art.  There are, apparently, a few golfers out there who occasionally have a really lousy day on the green. These are accomplished players.  But once in a while, everything goes wrong.  This was the case in September with two brothers, long time players both of them, who played in a local tournament and lost disastrously.  The errors, glitches, misses were so horrendous that they were, on later reflection, comical.  Hello?!  There’s nothing to do but call the caricature artist.  See if this will be therapeutic.

We’ll call the brothers Mike and Bob (not their real names) and say they played somewhere in New England at an undisclosed location.  They’re important guys, you see, and I’m not allowed to tell.  But what a relief, to discover that people who use words like anti-deluvian and fiduciary on a daily basis have such a robust sense of humor about themselves.

I think this is the funniest drawing I’ve ever made—or been allowed to make.  Thank you, Mike!

Golf Ball Quirks

For her 35th birthday earlier this summer, Heather got golf lessons as a gift from her husband.  Three months later she is doing fine, but it seems all sorts of quirky things happen when she’s on the links. To celebrate this quirkiness and her sense of humor about it all, Bill is giving her this drawing.  No occasion, just an appreciation of her charm. The drawing was presented to her at a recent back yard barbeque with friends and neighbors.

Cindy has been golfing since she was a kid and she is a fine golfer.  She’s so good, that she doesn’t even have to concentrate, it seems.  For her 45th birthday, Maryanne, her partner-in-golf, gave her this caricature, which was to show her in a dreamy, nonchalant mood.  Cindy still keeps winning, even when   she doesn’t even try to hit the ball or makes a “fat,”  bending the club as she whacks the ground.  The depth of the joke eludes me (as a non-golfer)  but it sure was fun drawing that cork-screw torso.

Happy Birthday, Cindy!  Thank you, Maryanne.

Ah, Golf

This is a retirement gift from Frank’s golf partners.  There was to be no reference to his profession (law) and no reference to recent surgeries.  He was to be shown in a state of pure bliss.  Golf.

Congratulations, Frank! Thank you, Otis.
