This was a first birthday party in the Elk Grove Village 13jen2Park District.  You can get an idea of how great the party room was from the background in these photos.  I drew 23 people in two hours.  Thank you, Cindy!

The kids at Taylor’s birthday party (see previous post) were so refined and stylish that I feel I need to devote a 13Nguyen12separate post to them.  Seersucker vest, matching shoes, bow tie, spiffy hats!  Rose head band, bows, silver tongs, poufy skirts, spaghetti straps! It was a treat to look at them and to draw them.

When I draw a child, especially a very young child, with the parents, the parents inevitably carry the burden of being funny (and dopy, often!) while the child stands behind them, triumphant and surreptitiously wise.  There’s a hierarchy:  the more power you have in this culture, the less you’ll have in my drawing.  That’s a principle at the heart of the art of caricature.  This is a very rich art form, make no mistake.——————————————————-

13Raths8bIt was a family party with as many adults as kids.  But 13Raths8since it was a Gabi’s birthday party, the mom restricted caricatures to only kids.  A good rule!  Generally it does happen that adults defer to kids at a kids’ party, but just to be sure, it’s wise to make it explicit.  Kids only!  I drew seventeen kids in two hours and in full color.  You guessed it: this was a well-organized event and there was no wait time between one drawing and the next.  Someone was always there to be drawn.  I 13Raths12like that.  I  like working intensely. The work actually comes out better when it’s one right after the other. Thank you, Monica!

Here are a few of the drawings.

13WabashY18b

Early in May the Wabash YMCA at 38th Street held a celebration for Black and Hispanic teens.  The celebration 13WabashY18wasn’t outer-directed, it was about themselves.  Here we are, let’s get together.  There were table games, sports and caricatures by that famous artist, Whatshername.  I was set up next to some plant growing experiments, which I loved.  In two-and-a-half hours I drew twenty-seven kids plus one exercise instructor. Thank you, Ramon!

Here a few drawings from that afternoon and the reactions that went with them.  Fun for everybody, including me. ————

The Corner Playroom on Clybourn is an excellent place to hold a birthday party for a three-year-old:  lots of colors and lots of cushiony surfaces. The little ones were kind enough to take two minutes out of their busy schedule to sit for me.  At that age, they seem to think this is a very odd thing to be asked to do.  But they do it—for mom and dad, the ones who really love getting a drawing like this for the child’s room.  As promised, I drew all fifteen kids in one hour.  Thank you,  Shannon!

Not just corn, kale, and kohlrabi.  The contemporary farmers market needs to find a way to keep the shoppers lingering among the white tents.   Why rush home and chop the greens right away.  Oh, stay a while, wontcha!  This farmers market had a band, a knock-knock joke telling contest and—ta-tah—that famous caricaturist whatshername.  So there I was in the midst of all this organic wholesomeness, doing my funny drawings.  All kids, as it turned out. No surprise there. Thank you, Elaine, Laura and Brad!

The family flew in from Florida to celebrate the baby’s first birthday back in the old neighborhood, the northern suburbs of Chicago.  This made for a very lively atmosphere because some folks had not seen each other for months and there was a lot to catch up on. I drew all the kids and then some parents, as time allowed.  You can see, that the parents got all my caricature “ammo.”  Loved it!
