The kids at Taylor’s birthday party (see previous post) were so refined and stylish that I feel I need to devote a
separate post to them. Seersucker vest, matching shoes, bow tie, spiffy hats! Rose head band, bows, silver tongs, poufy skirts, spaghetti straps! It was a treat to look at them and to draw them.
When I draw a child, especially a very young child, with the parents, the parents inevitably carry the burden of being funny (and dopy, often!) while the child stands behind them, triumphant and surreptitiously wise. There’s a hierarchy: the more power you have in this culture, the less you’ll have in my drawing. That’s a principle at the heart of the art of caricature. This is a very rich art form, make no mistake.——————————————————-
