The Methodist Hospitals in Merrillville throws a Mardi Gras bash for their staff. It’s about dressing up and at the same time being super relaxed.  Love it. You get a sense of the hilarity from these pictures. Thank you, Rafael!

MardiGras1This is the Mardi Gras party for the staff and contributors of the MardiGras2Methodist Hospitals in Northern Indiana.  Very posh!   As is the Innbruck Inn, where glittering masks, gowns and bow ties seem like the expected attire.  I love this event and love being asked back year after year.  Thank you again, Rafael!

Oh, about purple, green and gold:  those are the official Mardi Gras colors and I put them into the drawings, almost arbitrarily, just for the fun of it.

InnsbrookAInnsbrookBThis Mardi Gras honors the professionals and volunteers who make the Methodist Hospitals in northern Indiana so renowned. It is a gala event. I love this party and this year was the third time I was invited to participate. Here’s a small sample of my work that fabulous evening.  Thank you Mary and Rafael! I hope there will be many more Mardi Gras.

The entertainment was classy.  Make no mistake, this juggler was a great wit, a true theater person, who brought out the best in people.

MerrillvilleQ
The Innsbruck Inn in Merrillville, Indiana has to count as an ideal venue for a large corporate party. MerrillvilleRIt’s a long space, a chain of rooms each with dining and each with a different atmosphere. On one end, there’s dancing and loud music, in the middle there’s the bar, and in the last room it’s quiet. I was set up by the Christmas tree in the quiet room. Perfect! I could relate to people and that’s an essential ingredient in good caricature work. I absolutely loved this gig! I would hold it up as a template of thoughtful, sensitive party planning. Thank you, Rhonda!

I drew forty people in under four hours. Anyone can see, that they enjoyed my work as much as I did.

14Merrilville3aaMerrillville, IN is the place to see and be seen.  Well, the seeing isn’t so much, haha, but to be seen, 14Merrilville3bdefinitely.  Especially if you get to participate in the royal pageantry at the Radisson’s Mardi Gras.  Who knew, Merrillville, IN!

I did this event last year and was called back again. This is a bash to honor all the people at the Methodist Hospital who raised gobs of money for the institution.  The folks who bring in the most get to be king and queen, with crowns and golden trains several yards long.  They are followed by princes in cutaways and white tie, and princesses, with coronets and cover-up-girl-you’ll-catch-a-cold decolletage.

14MerrilvilleRoyalsThis is the most elaborate event I do all year, verily.  Light fixtures and plants—all in the most exotic balloon shapes imaginable.  Even a castle wall made out of balloons!  Next year, I expect to see a draw bridge made of balloons.

14MerrilvilleRafaelAThe best part, of course, is the people, all game for anything.  You can tell, by the expanse of flesh I show 14MerrilvilleRafaelBin my drawings of them.  I drew twenty-six people in full color, in three hours and with much jovial conversation.  Thank you again, Rafael! And next year I just may put pants on you.  May!  It can go both ways, you know.

13MerrilvilleMethHosp1

It was the third Mardi Gras for the Methodist Hospital of Merrillville. As soon as I walked in I though, “hmmm, this is an extravaganza.”  What else could you call it, when you see jugglers, magicians, acrobats, fortune tellers, caricaturists, a photographer, a photo booth, a fantastic balloon twister and a stilt walker with a stove pipe hat that must have been 16” high.  That’s just the hat.  The whole figure, dressed in formal black, must have been twelve or thirteen feet high.  Large balloons constructions in green, purple and gold were hanging from the ceiling. And then the guests:  long gowns, glitter, tuxes and the occasional fancy historic reference.  Best of all, in the Mardi Gras tradition, a king and queen with glittering gold trains about twenty feet long, made a grand entrance and strode up to the stage where they were honored for the volunteer work they had done in the past year.  They were followed by a retinue of other volunteers two of whom would then be voted for this honorary office for the coming year. The festivities honored people who worked beyond the call of duty.  Very impressive!!  Thank you, Rafael!

At this event, I was set up next to an extraordinary balloon twister and face painter, named Miss Pam.  I recommend her highly.   www.Miss-Pam.com.    MissPam@pamelasdesigns.com.    She works in the Chicago & Northwest Indiana Areas.
