It’s so nice to be called back.  I had a “repeat engagement” (love that term) at Kappys American Grill in Morton Grove, near Chicago.  Kappys is a family restaurant owned and operated by a wonderful family, who take care of their guests and their staff.  In the four years since I drew everybody working there the turnover has been very small.  A good sign, as we all know.  This time, just last month, I drew a small group made up of family, guests and restaurant staff.  Here they are, ta-tah!

Thank you again, Manolis and George!

Kappy’s, on Dempster at Harlem,  is a family restaurant owned and operated by an extended family. One of the brothers, Manolis, came up with the idea of getting caricatures of all the staff and then framing the drawings in the restaurant.  He had seen my work of Chicago Celebrities at Petterino’s in downtown Chicago.  The art of caricature is associated with celebrity, always has been. Think movie stars, politicians, royalty, Vanity Fair.  By getting caricatures of his wait staff, greeters, cooks, and busboys Manolis was telling them that he thinks they rock.  Morale is everything, after all.

The other brother, George, is at Kappy’s all the time, greeting people by name and making sure everybody’s happy. The place is obviously popular, it was packed.  I was set up in a corner of the restaurant by the windows and enjoyed watching the dynamics.  I did the drawings in two sessions, accommodating two shifts.  Friends and family of the owners also dropped in to get drawn by me.  All in all, a most rewarding experience. If you’re ever in the area and want a wholesome plentiful meal, stop in at Kappys.  And then look at my drawings in the hallway.  Thanks Manolis and George!

Not just corn, kale, and kohlrabi.  The contemporary farmers market needs to find a way to keep the shoppers lingering among the white tents.   Why rush home and chop the greens right away.  Oh, stay a while, wontcha!  This farmers market had a band, a knock-knock joke telling contest and—ta-tah—that famous caricaturist whatshername.  So there I was in the midst of all this organic wholesomeness, doing my funny drawings.  All kids, as it turned out. No surprise there. Thank you, Elaine, Laura and Brad!

A child’s first birthday is universally celebrated. It’s a big deal, all around the world.  Happy Birthday, Alexandra!  Look how much you’ve learned, look how big you are, look how you’ve survived all those sniffles and runny noses, we know it’s not easy. It’s all amazing. And look, you can walk! From now on, it’s a piece of cake.

Thank you, Lupe!  Here are some pictures from that wonderful party.  Little Alexandra did get drawn, but I have no photo of her, she was busy attending to her guests.

Next, “Hairy Harry” and the artist who took him up on his idea.  Thank you Harry, I love it when people GET it.  Give me ideas, any time!  And, btw, when I open my mouth like that, I’m not screaming, just hamming it up for the camera.
