In the middle of September we had the first chilly autumn day. The employees of this insurance IMG_4006services company and their families zipped up their hoodies and  buttoned up against the breeze and I, since I had to sit still for my work, came in multi layers of the polar fleece and ski pants variety. People like to comment on my gloves with the fingertips cut off. To draw, the hands have to be warm. It was a beautiful afternoon in Techny Prairie Park. Thank you, Laura.

KohlMuseumB The Kohl Children’s Museum in Northbrook was hosting a benefit. I found an adult size bench for the visitors to sit on—not so easy in a place where everything is Lilliputian—and started to draw. I drew not only the visitors, but also staff, many of whom were college students majoring in early childhood education. One of these was this young woman from Kenya, who now studies at Oakton. I’m featuring her here because of how she reacted to the drawing. She clasped her hands together in an expression of absolute delight. I love this shot! She is clearly happy and will treasure this picture. I get paid well for my work, but there’s more to it. Seeing a reaction like this, makes my day!

14WholeFoodsAI’ve done this event twice before and it’s nice to be 14WholeFoodsBcalled back. This is not a big party. The workers just come to sit for me to get their caricature. It makes the day, lifts the spirits a bit and shows them that the administration hopes they will continue in their dedication to the job. I’m set up in one of the upstairs office/meeting rooms. Very low key, very comfortable. The employees obviously enjoy my 14WholeFoodsDwork because I drew some of them last year and here they are again. It’s always fun! I enjoy this Northbrook crew. Thanks again, Andrea!

The Francesca’s Restaurants are always lovely.  This one was in Northbrook. Estelle was turning seventy and her daughter 13MichelleW12Michelle invited her closest friends.  It was a semi-surprise party.  Estelle expected just a few of the family and then—oh, my !—there was a whole room full, about thirty people. I drew most of them.  An interesting  bunch.  One of the people I drew was a cartoonist named Ken Krimstein, who has had SEVEN cartoons published in The New Yorker.  Ok, does everybody know how hard it is to just get one in and what a jaw dropping achievement seven is?!!  Being a subscriber, I was able to describe his latest cartoon, recalling the detail of the woman sitting in her kitchen.  That was fun.

Happy Birthday, Estelle!  Thank you, Michelle.

(Above, Rabbi Shlomo and his dancer wife, who got the extreme treatment from me precisely because they were sooooo refined and gracious.  It’s in the rule book.)

Northbrook Twins

I worked from photos sent by email.  Identical twins often show subtle differences of expression.  To get these subtleties required lots of photos, not just good front shots but also snap shots from all angles, like the ones taken at parties.  Luckily the cousins who commissioned the drawing had tons of excellent photos on hand.  It’s a close knit family with parties and celebrations happening all the time.  Thank you Jake, Elise, and Maya.  Happy 15th Birthday, Marion and Monika!

They are high school sophomores, sixteen-year-old classmates.  I drew thirty-one of these beautiful young women in two hours.  They all had long hair.  Long hair. Long. Every one of them. Two or three heads with curly long hair, the rest straight, but most importantly long, long, long.  Exquisite makeup, poise, refined manners.  When I asked what their favorite subject was, I heard Math , English and Dance.

That was nice to hear; drawing that fast allowed me only a glimpse into their minds, but it was quite rewarding.

This is Northbrook.  We were in a sun-filled party room at Francesca North. Everyone had a wonderful time, including me.  Happy Birthday, Abigail!  Sweet Sixteen!
