45thAnniversaryWhat do you give your parents on their 45th wedding anniversary? You present them with a drawing that shows their quirkiness, their goofiness, their vitality. The drawing is nothing. What matters is that they will scream with laughter, they will throw their heads back, they will point to parts of the drawing and say omygod, omygod and they will reach for a Kleenex because they’re laughing so hard that they’re crying. That moment is your gift to them.
45thAnniversarySemiFinalBtw, before I do the final drawing you have approved every detail. On the right is the drawing in the last stage of the work process. This is what the daughter approved and this is what I traced on a light table to produce the drawing that became the gift to her parents. The process works very well.

In a school with lots of parental involvement, this kindergarten class was treated to an end of the school year celebration with all sorts of activities and everybody got to sit for a caricature by that famous artist, Whatshername.  No less than three parents were directly managing the flow of traffic around me.  Fantastic!  I drew all twenty-eight kids in two hours. Here’s a small sampling.

Henry’s t-shirt says “Henry for President.”

Rachel and José are theater people in Brooklyn, working at the trade and bound to be famous soon.  He’s 5’6”, she’s  5’10”.  They’ve been together for two years, get along famously and their friends are all height doesn’t matter.  The parents are not chiming in so much.  So for Valentine’s Day they treated themselves to a kind of documentation of their enduring love.  Worth it!!  Turned out to be a big hit back stage with the rest of the crew and cast.  The rents are trying to catch up, they told me.  Congratulations, Rachel and José!
