The Herrington in St. Charles has a grand ballroom with a mezzanine where the bridal party and the close family of the bride and groom were set up.

Locating the caricaturists (there were two of us) on the mezzanine as well made it easy for us to draw a pre-selected crowd, a rather elegant solution to the sometimes awkward question of who will be eligible to get a drawing. It also meant that we were far from the loud dance music downstairs and therefore able to relate to the people we were drawing. When the artist can chat a bit with the subjects, the drawings tend to be better, more personal.
Things got really personal when a man named Mike got teased about his ears—all in good fun, of course.

Since I relate not only to the person I’m drawing at the moment but also to the whole ambiance and everything I hear around me, the fact that Mike’s friends were mercilessly ribbing him, with one buddy saying, “oh, yeah, go for the ears, it’s like Obama had a one night stand and Mike is the result” was an encouragement that I should pull all the stops. Mike, as you can see, cracked up. What you see on the top edge of his left ear is his wife’s hand, holding on.
In general, this was a collection of buddies and old friends. Jokes were flying. Hilarity all around.
Look at this couple, for example————————

Chiropractic1
It was an open house to attract people and get them Chiropractic2acquainted with this healing center on Main Street. There was food, a face-painter and, ta-tah, moi. Oh, and free massages, of course, and questions answered. A delightful excuse to hang out for a couple of hours on a sunny afternoon in what has become a perfect October. I drew twenty-three people in two-and-a-half hours. Thank you, Anita.

StCharles1
This was a family gathering to celebrate Porter’s first StCharles2birthday. You can find him in the gallery, below, he’s the spiffy baby in a gray v-neck sweater. One of the guests had been a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. She reminisced about those days and so, naturally, I drew her at her easel.
In all, I drew nine-teen people in full color in two hours. Thank you , Vickie.

13Bikes1b

It was pouring.  I was set up under one of the ten white tents.  Every twenty minutes or so someone came by 13Bikes1with a broom stick to poke the tent roofs so that the accumulated water could release to the ground.  Good grief! Saturday had been a fine sunny mid-September day and Monday was going to be glorious again, but the Sunday in between, yukk, buckets of rain all day.  It was particularly painful, since this was all about biking.  Not only that, it was about raising money for custom built bikes for disabled kids—as gifts to them.  By 10:30 a.m. when I was setting up under the soggy tent, a set of bikers was 13BikesAalready coming back from their benefit ride. I could see umbrellas and hoodies, but some people just walked around soaked.  Predictably, attendance at this event was low, though it was a carefully planned benefit.  I suggested to the organizer, that it would be best if I worked in color.  Color takes a little longer, but there wasn’t going 13BikesBto be a line anyway.  And color would possibly cheer things up a bit.  I ended up drawing only eight people in two hours.  There just weren’t many people around and those who did come seemed more concerned about grabbing something hot to drink.  Good work, Tamara! Try again next year, don’t give up.————————

The son is turning thirty and the husband is turning seventy.   30 + 70 = 100.  You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that this adds up to “Time to celebrate!”   Actually one of them was a physicist of the super collider variety, pretty close to a rocket scientist.  Also represented in this family gathering were lawyers and art historians.  I know, because I asked, “so, what do you do?”  It was a very casual, comfortable, cozy family get together and everybody was good looking.  The chocolates were age appropriate: milk chocolate was marked “30” and the dark chocolate, “70.”  Of course.  What would you do with such numbers!   Happy Birthdays, Matt and Ken!
