OswegoAYou can see the sweet-sixteen birthday girl in the upper left in this family “shot.” As soon as they were drawn, they all got up one by one to work their party. OswegoBOnly the eleven-year old stayed til the end, well, because I drew her last. See upper right in the drawing and here she is flashing her toothy smile.
I draw very fast, but—as I often have to explain at parties–it’s not scanning. I drew 27 people at this party in two hours.
This business of getting up as soon as you’re drawn is totally understandable. For the host family, parties are work. A million things to think about.
Thank you, Robert. Happy Birthday, Tania!

Part of the fun of looking at these pictures is in comparing the real face with the caricature.  In this case, the lighting where I was set up at Opa’s Restaurant allowed me to only get shots of the drawing, not the person.  But if you’ve been following this blog even a little, you know that the drawing always captures a likeness—with a comic twist, of course.  So, here’s a gallery of poised, well-groomed young women, drawings only.  There’s a rule book somewhere that says you have to have long-long-long hair when you’re sixteen , but as you can see, they manage to project their own individuality.  Happy Birthday, Christina!

That last one is the birthday girl, of course, she got to go in full color.  And now a few boys and then a very stylish mom who works out and speaks four languages.  It’s always interesting,

The sunny party room at Walker Bros in Lincolnshire—perfect setting for a sunny crowd of sixteen year-old girls.  I drew all twenty-five of them in two hours.  That means, black-white, goes fast, and only the birthday girl gets the whole body drawing.  As you can see, the head already has all the cheerful information.  Now, let’s talk about hair, long hair.  If there’s a sixteen-year old out there with an alternative haircut, please, stand up and shout. But no, long long hair—must be a rule. De rigeur.  Just kidding, but if there were the occasional short hair, the drawing would go so much faster.  So, like, who cares.  Happy Birthday, Rebecca!

Sixteen, sweet, smart…and funny!  I drew a serious piano student, a tenor sax player, a baton twirler,  a criminology enthusiast, a novel reader, a devoted teacher, a math lover, a strong soft ball player and a girl with a mop of red hair. And a drawing enthusiast who spent much of the evening watching my technique.  We talked shop, about papers, markers and the best places to buy art supplies. The party took place last night in Tinley Park during a raging thunder storm.  But pizza and caricatures will make for a cozy evening .  Thank you all for the great evening, the giggles and the inspiration.  Happy Birthday, Lauren!  Rent “The Big Sleep”  and you’ll see Lauren Bacall at her best, working with a smart script.

Thank you, Jim and Valerie!

They are high school sophomores, sixteen-year-old classmates.  I drew thirty-one of these beautiful young women in two hours.  They all had long hair.  Long hair. Long. Every one of them. Two or three heads with curly long hair, the rest straight, but most importantly long, long, long.  Exquisite makeup, poise, refined manners.  When I asked what their favorite subject was, I heard Math , English and Dance.

That was nice to hear; drawing that fast allowed me only a glimpse into their minds, but it was quite rewarding.

This is Northbrook.  We were in a sun-filled party room at Francesca North. Everyone had a wonderful time, including me.  Happy Birthday, Abigail!  Sweet Sixteen!
