It’s a tradition at Topco:  when you retire you get a caricature by that famous artist Whathername.  I love doing these projects. It’s not just getting the likeness, but then drawing in just enough of the hobby or interest to add character without detracting from the person or cluttering up the image.   In this case, I dealt with a music lover.  Needless to say, I’m partial to people with a passion for the arts.  I really enjoyed drawing Ken as an opera lover, a collector of guitars and a world traveler.  Thanks again, Maureen!

I just noticed something about this drawing, which was done a few weeks ago.  The line that indicates the mountains around Las Vegas can be interpreted as a “stress graph.”  You can see it to the right of the retiring executive and above the swimming pool.  It’s a mountain and it’s also a graph line. The line goes up, peaks, and then—with retirement—descends.  That’s it, Frank, no more stress, no more tension, it’s all sixes from now on.  Congratulations!

Susan’s retirement phantasy:  reading crime novels.  In my caricature you’re wearing the ultimate detective garb, Ms. Sherlock.  Working at Topco was nice and getting this whimsical caricature of yourself is also pretty nice, hmmm.  Congratulations, Susan!

So, how does the process work?  Smoothly.

The photos of the person are emailed to me.  I make two or three pencil sketches and the client picks the one that most captures the likeness and the personality.  After that I work out the rest of the body.  When that is approved, I go for color.  The client comments and approves every step.  The final drawing is exactly what was approved.

Doreen is retiring from Topco.  I don’t know what all she’s getting as a retirement gift from the company, but she will certainly enjoy this colorful caricature showing her with her favorite things to do.  Because the drawing is 11 x 14, a nice large size, the various elements in it come across as important and lively.  It makes for a nice presentation.  Congratulations, Doreen!  Best to you!

Donna G. is retiring from her many years at Topco and looking forward to her pool, many good books, and her six grandchildren frolicking around her in the back yard.  This drawing just flowed out of my pens, such fun.  Caricatures by Katherine Hilden are now a tradition at Topco for people who are retiring.   I think it’s a great idea, not just because I love doing these but because I can imagine the pleasure they bring to the recipients.    Congratulations, Donna!

Topco and Mike

After thirty-four years at Topco,  Mike retired and the company honored him at an award dinner.  In addition, he received a Hilden Caricature showing him with all his main interests:  chess, comics and old movies.  This was fun to draw.  Congratulations Mike!  Thank you, Maureen.
