The high-domed Masonic Temple in downtown Crawfordsville was the venue for this well-planned wedding, all in black, white and gold.  Even the flower girls and the ring boy were in black.  I was set up in the lobby and enjoyed the combination of formality and casualness. Emily, the wedding planner, ably attended to all details:

All fun, but from a caricaturist’s point of view, the most fun is getting a mining engineer to crack up.  Arthur works in limestone mining and he explained the difference between New York limestone and Indiana lime stone to me, which I appreciate because I’m interested in stuff, though I’ll have to look up the chemical difference again, even after he had explained it to me.  Well, after all that, he laughed out loud when he saw the drawing. That made my day!

Wedding with Makowiec

As you know by now, if you’ve been following this blog, the last people drawn at a late-running party often gets to show a bit of skin.  This engineer was the last person to pose for me at this genteel Polish wedding. The hairiness is all the funnier because he was actually very cultured.  (So, naturally, he got the joke.)

You can see how poised and refined even the younger kids are. Every social group has a certain ambiance and I love walking in and reading the crowd to get a feeling of how funny I’m allowed to make the drawings.  This was a secure bunch and my pen just danced away. Thank you, Marta.

Wedding in the Park

In the park pavilion, actually.  Gotta be rainproof for a wedding! The pavilion was well appointed, but as wedding venues go, this was definitely on the casual side. The bride and groom had upper level positions at the post office. The guests came dressed as they pleased, from casual to glittery.  The important thing was, obviously, that everybody be comfortable, the ultimate goal being enjoyment.  And enjoyment is what I was surrounded by the whole evening.

Thank  you, Samantha and George.

rotundacouples6

The wedding in The Rotunda was in the afternoon and I was set up in a corner near a window.  The light was lovely, but I was afraid people would not wonder over to be drawn, especially since the bar was on the opposite wall and this was a big place. Not only did they find me, they gathered around and created a wonderfully hilarious atmosphere. rotundacouples1 rotundacouples2 rotundacouples3 rotundacouples4 rotundacouples5

My drawings reflect the ambiance of a party.  I can gage the humor in the drawings to what I hear around me and to how people react and talk about the drawings.  Well, this crowd rated a ten and you can see that in the work.

It should be easy to match the drawings to the photos of the couples.

Waukesha, near Milwaukee, has a spectacular building that was formerly a bank and is now a party venue.  The Rotunda is the place to see and be seen, perfect for weddings.

This wedding at the end of August was so wonderful that I have to devote two posts to it.  I’ll start with the general scene.  You would think I’d have a shot of the bridal couple, but they sat for me very briefly, I finished the drawing on the fly, walked it over to the bride and then forgot about the photo business.

The next post will highlight six couples from that wonderful wedding bash.

dEARBORN1

From Prospect Heights I drove directly downtown, taking LaSalle Street to avoid the distaste of Taste of Chicago.  A movie was being shot with the Board of Trade as the backdrop, like The Untouchables except this was all about touching.  A bride was puckering up to kiss her kneeling new husband. Camera men circling around. Ah, I love this town! Traffic was barely slowed by this.  Then I noticed the bridesmaids near the columns of Northern Trust.  Ermmm, not a movie scene after all.  This was a real wedding.  I love this town!

The party on South Dearborn was equally glamorous. My hostess, the mother of the groom,  flew in from Washington DC.  The mother of the bride flew in from Las Vegas.  The wedding will be in (where did they say?) I think, California or Hawaii.  Much of the family is from the Midwest.  So, natch, you gotta throw the bridal shower in Chicago.  That’s because you love this town!

Thank you, Lou Ann!———————————————

SatNtFev
This is the bridal couple from that Halloween Wedding I did on, well, Halloween last year.
https://katherinehilden.wordpress.com/2015/12/17/wedding-halloween/
I didn’t get a chance to draw them at the party, so I drew them later, from photos. They had changed from their formal wedding attire into costumes, their theme being Saturday Night Fever.
