Hallow1
This fabulous wedding was held on October 31st—Halloween–in a Hallow2formal banquet hall in Homer Glen. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about the combination Wedding+Halloween, but all my doubts were dispelled the moment I walked into the high-ceiling room: black table clothes, black-covered banquet chairs with gleaming orange satin bows, orange spot lights running up the high walls. The bride and groom had changed from their formal, conventional wedding attire into Saturday Night Fever threads and did a lovely lead dance to the Bee-Gees. The guests were dressed UP in elegant theatrical costumes. I drew everything from Bonnie & Clyde to Tutankhamen to Cleopatra & Her Penguin Escort to an assortment of exquisitely painted sculls. Really, this was not a trick-or-treat crowd. People had flown in from the coasts and given a lot of thought to their presentation, and were willing to pay for it. So, lesson learned, if you know your friends and they’re as imaginative as you are, go ahead, have a Halloween Wedding! Oh, and have me as the caricaturist.

The man who commissioned the drawing of Béla Fleck’s family (previous post) liked that drawing so much that he decided this was a great gift idea. His son had gotten married that year and he thought, a caricature of the bride and groom would make an excellent Christmas present. And so it does! I got an email saying the newly weds loved it.Yeah!

The Herrington in St. Charles has a grand ballroom with a mezzanine where the bridal party and the close family of the bride and groom were set up.

GenevaWed2 GenevaWed1

Locating the caricaturists (there were two of us) on the mezzanine as well made it easy for us to draw a pre-selected crowd, a rather elegant solution to the sometimes awkward question of who will be eligible to get a drawing. It also meant that we were far from the loud dance music downstairs and therefore able to relate to the people we were drawing. When the artist can chat a bit with the subjects, the drawings tend to be better, more personal.
Things got really personal when a man named Mike got teased about his ears—all in good fun, of course.

IMG_4314 IMG_4313

Since I relate not only to the person I’m drawing at the moment but also to the whole ambiance and everything I hear around me, the fact that Mike’s friends were mercilessly ribbing him, with one buddy saying, “oh, yeah, go for the ears, it’s like Obama had a one night stand and Mike is the result” was an encouragement that I should pull all the stops. Mike, as you can see, cracked up. What you see on the top edge of his left ear is his wife’s hand, holding on.
In general, this was a collection of buddies and old friends. Jokes were flying. Hilarity all around.
Look at this couple, for example————————

GaryWed1The Pavilion in Marquette Park in Gary is the place to see and be seen. It’s laid out so that an expansive balcony faces West, which is appropriate for evening events. When I arrived, the bridal party and guests were enjoying their photo ops with the sunset behind them. GaryWed5I noticed a girl, about nine or ten, sketching the view. Getting all dressed up for this formal event, she had the presence of mind to bring a sketch pad along! That’s how we are, we artists: our art can easily override social obligations. Ha. This was a touching sight for me.
After cocktails the party moved upstairs to the grand ball room, a intelligently planned space, with high ceiling, balcony and arcade. I drew thirty-seven people in two-and-a-half hours. Thank you, Uzma!—-

14MtMorrisWedAMount Morris, West of the Fox River, is a bit of a drive from Evanston, but this was well worth it. The 14MtMorrisWedBreception was held in the White Pines Forest preserve. In a log cabin, no less. Well, not the kind Abe Lincoln was born in. This is a large restaurant, complete with dance floor and lots of atmosphere, as you’d expect in a setting like that. I drew thirty-six people in three hours, amid much laughter. As you can see from these drawings, I pulled out all the stops for these relaxed, friendly people. It was a great evening. 14MtMorrisWedCThanks, Whittney and David!

13Wed28thWentworth1bThis was the New Furama at 28th and Wentworth.  I was set up in the satin draped reception room and did not see all the entertainment that was presented, but I know I was one of many entertainers at this lavish wedding reception.  I drew twenty-three people in high spirits, as you can see in this small sampling.  Thank  you ,Phung and Thuy!——————————————————–

13WedSchaumbg1b

Chandler’s Chop House & Grille has the folksy, down-to-earth name of an eatery, but in fact the space where this wedding 13WedSchaumbg1reception was held was nothing less than grand.  The ceremony took place on a veranda overlooking a vast expanse of the golf course.  The various greens just glowed in the late afternoon sun.  Spectacular!  Then, inside, for the reception and dinner we were in a high ceilinged large ball room.  A cathedral-beamed ceiling will add grandeur to any space and will tend to contribute to the relaxation of your crowd.  And relaxed they were, as attested to by these photos.

As is so often the case at weddings, the bride and groom are busy mingling with their guests and don’t have time to come to the caricaturist’s table to be drawn themselves. This was a wonderfully planned reception,  Laurie.  Congratulations to you both and much happiness in your life together!

I drew forty-five people in four hours. It would be nice if I could show all of them here, but space does not allow that and I’ll just pick a few of the wedding guests.—————-
