After the Milwaukee experience (previous post) I drove through lush corn fields to my next event.  Yorkville, Illinois, is south-west of Aurora, sixty miles from Chicago’s State and Madison, as the crow flies. There was no time to stop and buy any of the sweet corn offered by road side signs, had to get to a wedding reception and the drive was two-and-a-half hours.  Once I pulled into the subdivision of gabled and turreted new mansions set on rolling lawns, I could hear the music and see the cluster of cars from a distance.  This was a wonderfully informal wedding reception, with barefoot kids playing games on the lawn and adults joining in.

I set up in the air-conditioned house, next to the sliding patio doors. You might think that I wouldn’t get any customers there, since the party was set up outside. But after the drawing of the bride and groom circulated, my breakfast-nook-work-station was crowded.  The drawings were enticing, but…hmmm…so was getting away from the hot and humid lawn.

Men were hard to motivate, no surprise there.  A man would sit with his wife to be drawn and then take off… seen that before, too.  I drew lots of girls, girlfriends, sisters, girl cousins and moms with daughters.

Congratulations Sarah and Clayton!  And thanks for letting me participate to your celebration.
